The Sagrada Família, Barcelona’s iconic basilica, began its journey on March 19, 1882, when architect Francisco de Paula del Villar laid its foundation. In 1883, Antoni Gaudí took over the project, infusing it with his unique vision that blended Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms. By 1914, Gaudí dedicated himself exclusively to the Sagrada Família, working tirelessly until his untimely death in 1926. At that time, less than a quarter of the basilica was completed.
The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) brought significant setbacks, including the destruction of many of Gaudí’s original plans. Despite these challenges, construction resumed in 1939, guided by salvaged materials and photographs. Advancements in technology, such as computer-aided design, have since accelerated progress. By 2010, the basilica passed the halfway point in construction.
In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI consecrated the Sagrada Família and declared it a minor basilica. The Virgin Mary’s tower was completed in 2021, and the four Evangelist towers were finished by 2023. The central Tower of Jesus Christ is expected to reach its full height of 172.5 meters by 2026, coinciding with the centenary of Gaudí’s death. However, decorative elements and a grand stairway at the main entrance may continue to be completed until 2034.
This monumental journey reflects a blend of artistic brilliance, historical resilience, and unwavering dedication. To witness this masterpiece firsthand, secure your official tickets at Ticket Sagrada Familia.
