The story of Barcelona’s beloved Sagrada Familia begins with a passionate vision. In 1872, bookseller and philanthropist José María Bocabella, inspired by his visit to the Vatican, founded the Spiritual Association of Devotees of Saint Joseph to sponsor an expiatory church in Barcelona. By March 19, 1882, under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar, a neo-Gothic crypt began construction—but Villar’s resignation in 1883 paved the way for a young architect to redefine the project forever.
That architect was Antoni Gaudí, whose visionary genius transformed the Sagrada Familia from a conventional Gothic church into a groundbreaking symbol of Catalan Modernism. He infused the design with organic geometry, theatrical symbolism, and faith-driven creativity, rejecting straight lines to echo nature—and famously quipped, “My client is not in a hurry,” referring to God.
Gaudí gradually dedicated himself exclusively to the basilica from 1914 until his death in 1926. By then, only a portion—roughly 15–25%—stood completed, including the crypt and the Nativity façade. The Sagrada Familia remains a living tribute to Gaudí’s unwavering devotion—a masterpiece that bridges art and spirituality, still rising toward completion.
